Borrowed Time

Borrowed Time was my very first band. It began under the name "The Difference," with entirely different members. I answered an ad in Minneapolis' City Pages and met Zel, the bandleader. Along with Ginger on drums, Joe Casual on bass, and ___ on keyboards, we lasted about a year or so, playing 7th Street Entry, some house concerts and Loring Park.
Zel was friends and sometime bandmates with J. Free, who I coincidentally met at Hot Licks Records. J and I became friends, and I learned that he had played in a band called Dancing in the Dark. As The Difference kind of fell apart, J and I began working together, at first playing to backing tracks on cassettes that J created, then pulling in Joe Casual temporarily. We needed to find a bassist, and put up an ad. Ward came to see us at a show, and wanted to join. Then we put up an ad for a drummer, and Bill responded. He was from the cover band world, which was very different than us, but we worked together well. Then the band was formed, and renamed "Borrowed Time."
Borrowed Time played at the 7th St. Entry, Goofy's Upper Deck, various house concerts, but eventually came to an end in 1985.
We recorded three album's worth of material, and 40 years later, our first album will be coming out in a special lathe-cut box set, thanks to J Free, as well as a vinyl edition. If you like Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, early Cure, you'll like Borrowed Time!
